Did the Allies use Rail transportation in World war II?

Bruce Calise: Rail transportation was not widely used by the Allies to get the troops to the front for one reason, we had blasted the heck out of the rail system to deny it to the Germans.We did use the rail system behind our lines to move men and material, but the tracks were rarely active within ten miles or so of the front.There were a couple of reasons, but the biggest was the thought that if the Germans did a strong breakout, they could grab the lines and use them to move in reinforcements.
