Vegetarians and vegans?

Gale Hartt: I'm a vegan, & when people ask me why, I say I do it for our planet. I love our planet & all of its inhabitants, no matter how big or small or ugly or cute. And you're right, it really is annoying how some people keep on pressuring you to eat meat again. I have a friend who can't accept the fact that I'm vegan & he keeps telling me to eat meat. I just stand my ground & tell him no.And I live in the south too. I know a couple of vegetarians though. But none of them are in my family. My family us from South America, & basically all they eat there is meat, & I'm only 15, so my parents aren't too happy with my decision, but hey, they're gonna have to feed me, so ya know how it goes...

Ronnie Sardi: They are healthy enough I would have thought. Check the package for calories/fat. Anything less than 10 grams fat per 100 grams of product is acceptable. Although, gluten free as well as vegan is very restrictive so you'd need to make sure you're getting enough nu! trition - especially if you're slimming too.

Shelley Stevens: If people are being overly judgemental to you about it, there is liitle use getting into a discussion with them as their minds are made up. Whether they choose meat for themselves, or just do what has been pushed on them their whole lives, it makes no difference. Psychologically, I find it interesting how vegetarianism strikes such a chord with people. I would think that maybe people are interested in it, they just don't know how to connect the dots.Think about it. Vegetarianism is such a simple concept. Even the most unintelligent people in the world can see this. However, only a very small percentage of the populace is vegetarian. Why is this? Anybody can see its more humane, though nobody practices it.I think that the human mind craves to be morraly correct. That is why there are many more people out of jail than in. I think it applys to everything we do. When people ask you or prod you about your vegeta! rianism, maybe it just means that deep deep down, they are int! rigued by it.How many billions of dollars do the meat, dairy and egg industries wield for marketing and basically pushing their product down the public's throat?? I know its annoying...

Georgianna Zollo: I'm a vegetarian right now, but I hope to eventually go vegan. My main reason is for health. Now, it's not completely practical for me to go vegan because I'm a college student and the cafeteria makes it hard to be vegan and get proper nutrition. I'd pretty much only be eating salads. I do, however, try to limit my egg/dairy intake as much as possible. I do not drink milk or eat eggs, but if they are cooked into something, I will eat it. Same with cheese..I don't load up on it, but if it's in a casserole or something I'm going to eat it. Until I'm living on my own and I have more access to non-cafeteria foods, I'm staying a vegetarian. I'm on my way to becoming vegan, but right now it's almost impossible....Show more

Clare Hoard: vegan because some vegetarian! s still contributing to the abuse of farm animals if you still drink milk cheese ect the milk that is being drunk is comeing from the cows that are being abusedThe latest HSUS investigation at a dairy cow slaughter plant has illuminated one of the cruelties that can occur in the dairy industryâ€"an industry that, like other sectors involved in factory farming, generally keeps consumers in the dark about the conditions in which it raises and kills animals. There are about nine million dairy cows in the United States. The majority of these animals typically aren't living on rolling green pastures, but rather are confined indoors, often in tie-stalls.Institutionalized AbuseOne lesser-known abuse in the dairy industry is tail-dockingâ€"a practice banned in several European countries and opposed by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Tail-docking is the partial amputation of up to two-thirds of the tail, typically performed without any painkiller whatsoever. Scientific ! studies have shown this mutilation causes distress, pain, and increased! fly attacks. In addition to breeding them for astronomical rates of milk production, producers often inject cows with hormones to further increase their unnaturally large milk yield. One animal scientist compares the modern dairy cow's metabolic stress stemming from hyper-productivity to a human jogging six hours a day, every day. Dairy cows are milked for ten months a year (including seven of their nine months of pregnancy) until their worn-out bodies begin to give in and they're slaughtered. Approximately 15 percent of the hamburger meat in the United States comes from "spent" dairy cows.Although cows can live to be 15 or even older, they're typically slaughtered around four years of age. And as The HSUS's investigation revealed, dairy cows who are too sick or injured to walk to their own slaughter ("downers") can endure terrible abuses. The Connection between Dairy and VealLike humans and all other mammals, cows produce milk for their offspring and only lactate when they'! ve given birth. In fact, humans are the only species that regularly consumes mother's milk past infancy, much less the mother's milk of another species.Dairy cows are usually kept in a cycle of near-constant pregnancy. On average, half of their calves are females and will likely replace their mothers on the dairy line. Male calves are often separated from their mothers within the first dayâ€"even within a few hoursâ€"after birth, causing both mother and calf great distress. Many of these day-old male calves are raised for veal and can be doomed to spend their entire four-to-five-month lives chained or tethered by the neck in individual crates so small, they can't even turn around. The veal industry is a direct byproduct of the dairy industry and depends on it for its survival....Show more

Danica Timperman: Can you be a little more specific. What are the ingredients?

Andra Oger: I'm a vegetarian, not a vegan, because I don't like to eat meat, and that's about i! t. It's not so much about animal rights as it is creep-factor for eatin! g meat. Animals shouldn't have to be killed so I can eat, and eggs and cheese don't kill or directly injure animals. I feel that this is morally acceptable and not too creepy. Plus, I live in Wisconsin. I'd probably be deported if I didn't eat cheese. ;)

Babette Deloe: I'm 13 and vegetarian as well, and for ethical reasons too. I completely understand how you feel with those annoying people who think the protein is a higher priority than the life of an innocent animal..and it's not like we don't get any protein; some people are so ignorant! I was just complaining the other day to my family about these annoying comments I get from people, telling me either that I'm not going to last, that it's a stupid thing to do, that I should quit..ect, ect. My oldest brother is a vegetarian too, and once when someone questioned him, he said: "My body isn't a graveyard for the corpses of tortured and murdered animals." Which is gruesome, as is eating meat. It's true.Anyway, to answe! r your question, I just explain my beliefs to people. I tell them how much I love animals and how I think that their souls aren't worth any more than human souls, and you wouldn't eat a human, so why eat an animal? I explain to them that I can't stand knowing that something I'm eating, when I have control if I want to eat it or not, was once alive and had a chance at life. Something people say ALWAYS is that the reason that animals are here is to eat them. They don't realize the joy animals can bring you, not on your plate :) just tell them that it's a personal decision, just like it was a decision for them to not be vegetarian.

Tamatha Neubaum: Simply put, I'm vegan because I'm against the exploitation of animals (humans included). Being vegan is the best lifestyle I can live in order to avoid said exploitation as much as possible. Vegetarianism is senseless from an animal rights perspective. There is more inhumane treatment of animals in the dairy & egg industries t! han in meat production. By consuming dairy, you're still supporting the! veal industry. etc. etc.Edit: Ahhh, yes. I'd also like to know why YOU are vegetarian. :)...Show more

Chris Coggins: "No one needs meat, ask any dietitian. Better yet ask Bob Harper, the trainer from the biggest loser, carl lewis, Natalie Portman or Gwyneth Kate Paltrow. There are other ways of getting protein."

Truman Biby: in it i put vegetarian chili, mushrooms, and spinach. i am trying to lose weight. I am going vegan ( for the animals ) but i am also trying a gluten free diet

Mack Ukich: I'm a Ovo Vegetarian I only eat eggs that come from chickens that are farm raised the right way as chickens should be I drink soy milk instead of cows milk because of how they are treated I eat organic Stony Field yogurt I don't eat cheese no Meat the rest yes I also eat smart balance because I don't really like the taste of Earth Balance but will go back to it if I have to but I will go back to it after my smart balance is gone.Im almost Vegan if my cousin ever stop! s having pet chickens which are raised and treated like real chickens should be I may then give up eating eggs and find an egg substitute for recipies like cookies/cake/brownies you name it and I will take a vitamin b12 supliment to.The main reasons I'm Vegetarian are,1. The Animals2. The Earth3. My Health4. Eating Dead animals is totally gross/sick and totally inhumain.5. I Hate seing animls suffer and be abused for no reason other then food or just plain stupidity On another note I don't eat eggs unless I want them or in dessurts that is it otherwise I don't eat eggs....Show more

Dee Depung: people do not consider vegan diets.

Ervin Overbee: Either ignore them or just say "I don't harass you about your diet, so don't harass me about mine."

Fermin Tara: I would love to be vegan. Unfortunately, I have a lot of food allergies, such as all nuts, beans and peas. So basically, one major food group (with lots of protein) is out of the question. If I was vegan, ! I would probably be very unhealthy.Keep in mind that I am grossed out b! y most dairy and definitely don't eat or like eggs (never have), but I do have organic skim milk with cereal, sometimes I have some healthy yogurt and a lot of my meals have some sort of cheese on them. I do try to keep it to a minimum, but I need a daily serving or two to get SOME protein. Most of the other time, I live a raw food diet, mostly just eating fruits and veggies, but to get protein I usually have a cooked meal for dinner (like pasta, sometimes with or without cheese). I don't think I could be healthy and live off of only raw foods while not getting some major nutrients from nuts and beans and everything.I am very aware of what goes on to animals when it comes to dairy, just as I am aware what happens with them when they're turned into meat. Please understand that while I love animals, I have to put myself first in this situation. I am trying to help them out in any other ways possible. I hope that explains things and if you have any questions or want details, ju! st ask!Why are YOU vegetarian? :)...Show more

Jon Bergmeier: It is not just the south-I think it is everywhere. I am not a vegetarian and I think the reason is meat eaters have never known any other way, so they don't know what vegetarians eat. I was like this too until I started finding out about it, including here. I don't criticize vegetarians; from what I have found I now think they are probably healthier than meat eaters. One other thing I've noticed about some, not all vegetarians is they are too willing to harshly criticize meat eaters. I've noticed that here on Yahoo answers; some call meat eaters murders. "Tay" made a posting about the seal hunt stating she would like to kill all of the seal hunters. Being like this does nothing for vegetarianism, it turns people off because they may think all vegetarians are like this. So I hope my answer helps!

Jannie Ariola: I'm vegan because there is still abuse in milk and eggs. It is hypocritical to condemn the ab! use of animals for meat consumption and then happily eat cheese that co! mes from the same animal abuse.

Ezekiel Kadner: Try warming liver sausage with enough water to make a paste, then spread it on pancakes. No syrup or butter Delicious!

Katheryn Skrobacki: I completely understand....I am a vegan and I get comments like that all the time.Let me tell you something that I think works best against almost everyone. Kindness. If someone is being rude to you, do not retort back, they only want to rile you up and get you going, you know why? When they are rude or get all defensive about, most people, deep down, on some level are insecure about it and only want to rile you up and talk negatively about it to try and cover up that on some level they do agree, but do not want to admit it because they don't want to think that they have been doing the wrong thing all their life. And really it's not "wrong" per se...there is no definate right or wrong, but they don't have to feel like they have to keep doing something they feel is a tad wro! ng just because they have been doing it their whole live. It's their decision to decide to feel that way. But yeah, they tell you you are dumb about it, because they are either misinformed or are insecure about their own habits on some level and try make you feel bad about it because they want you to go back to eating meat, so that you aren't that constant reminder around that 'something is up.'Now, like i said in the beginning. You can choose to do what you wish, but i personally think killing em with kindness is the best way to go. If you pull it off correctly, it can make it more obvious to other people that the person is being a jerk or rude, but if you retort negatively right back at them, you are stooping down to their level and it makes people think that you both are rude. Say someone is making some nasty comments and shouting them across the room at you....DO NOT SHOUT BACK....raising your voice does actually nothing, and only makes them want to keep going with! it....what you should do is simply say in a nice sweet voice "Ohhh dar! ling, I'm so sorry you feel that way about it, I'm sorry that you are misinformed about it, but since you seem to be in a bad mood would you like to take a nice breather outside? Here let me get the door for you :)" (lol maybe corny but that was on the spot) something along those lines.... But when you say things like that, it turns all the attention back to him or her and people do start realizing that he or she is a tad over reacting. you can incorporate witty, politely, just be careful about it. But honestly, being nice about it, sometimes even ignoring them if you don't feel like even bothering to be nice about it to them, works. But beat em with kindness :) Lol not relating to veganism, but a better 'kill em with kindness thing' I read about someone who had another person just butt ahead of them in line and they responded something along the lines with "Ohhh dear, you must feel sooooo bad that you just have to cut in front of me in line, I do hope you feel bette! r." XD

Von Houskeeper: i am allegic to eggs and dairy and have been off them for over 7 years and then decide to be vegetarian 2 years ago so basically thats why im vegan!

Azalee Ahrendes: Just wondering.. I'm a girl and it makes ppl cringe that i eat smoked fish or smoked oysters, sardines, and can salmon with red hott on crackers... Just wondering what else is so great out there

Dalia Causby: i know what you mean! i am vegetarian and have the same problem about people always telling me how stupid it is that i wont eat meat. i have been a vegetarian since i was 12 and a healthy one too! (im now 15) no one in my family is vegetarian and i have actually influenced a few people to give up things like red meat :)anyway when people try to rag on me i have a speech that goes something like this "i am a conscious, smart, and healthy consumer. i don't criticize you and you diet, i don't think you have the right to criticize mine. last time i checked vegetarians ! are normally more healthy than the average joe because we actually thin! k about what were eating. if you are concerned by me being malnourished you have nothing to worrie about! animals are tourcherd just to by killed and eaten, it is sad the way the world is not aware of the issues, but i am! and you should be too; you should be ashamed that you support that. (*normally by now they don't have anything to say, but i go for a little longer*) im also a vegetarian because i love our planet and it is the only one we have. i bet that you did not know that if a family of 4 gave up meat for one day once a week, that family would be saving more energy than if they switched from a full sized suv to hybrid Purus. now if you have anything else to say i suggest that you save it until you decide to look up the facts."and normally they just kinda look at me a bit confused. you should keep it up no matter what anyone says! i hope you can use some of this to shut-up some meat eaters :)

Lou Ravelo: I'm basically looking for ideas on how to respond! Some ! people I know just can't accept the fact that I've become a vegetarian (and I've become one for ethical reasons). I'm 13 so people act as though it's a dumb choice because I "need protein" well almost all foods contain some amount of protein. I don't preach about what I believe to people I know either. I keep to myself and only tell people about vegetarianism if they are curious to know. But somehow people still feel the need to make little rude comments about it and act as though I'm very dumb because of my decision. I'm obviously not because I am well educated on it, while some meat eaters are not and make arguments that make no sense whatsoever. Some people have tried to convince me to eat meat again. It's quite annoying! Plus I'm from the south, so not many people are vegetarians. No one in my family is a vegetarian and no one at my school that I know of is a vegetarian. Everyone around me seems to love meat!...Show more

Buddy Ardd: I have also recently went glute! n free, due to health reasons. What kind of tortillas have you found t! hat are gluten/wheat free.. I haven't been so lucky as to find any, only taco shells. What's the brand and which store did you purchase them at please!!

Enriqueta Steffen: I usually just act very casual like "is there a problem?" when people act surprised or make their side comments about it. It usually shuts them up. You just cannot act self conscious or ashamed. If you act proud and very educated about the topic then they stop.

Toney Flaten: 1

May Stands: I am vegetarian for spiritual, ethical and religious reasons. For me, having been a nursing mother four times, I know that the cow that is not milked is in pain and alleviating suffering is an essential part of my lifestyle and my faith. Dairy products constitute a very small part of my diet and come from local organic herds where cows still have names and enjoy the grass of the fields. For me the basic principle of Ahimsa, or non-violence is vitally important. The unethical treatment of animals in the! factory farms is appalling, and their suffering is heart rending. The growth hormones, antibiotics, steroids and pesticides they are subjected to are nothing I choose to ingest or support. Furthermore the impact on the planet and the ecosystem, contributing the excessive carbon footprint to global warming, the waste of water and the impact on the ground water are all significant deterrents for me.But of primary concern to me is the horrendous suffering of the human animals, the children and adults who will starve to death this year and every year as we feed life sustaining grain to cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens etc. and worse turn it into alcohol to kill our brain cells rather than feed these precious humans. How many Albert Schweitzers and Mother Teresas, how many Pablo Cassals. Mozarts, Lennons and Rembrants do we lose each and every year among this wanton waste of human life? Additionally, I have no need or desire to turn my body into a grave site for the rotting flesh ! of putrefying animals, causing constipation, poor absorption of nutrien! ts and abnormal weight gain. Young boys developing breasts and pre-adolescent girls entering their menstrual cycles at age 7 and younger is an appalling thought to me. All of which are excellent reasons for me to avoid flesh foods and to restrict my dairy intake as well as to teach vegetarian cooking, write a vegetarian web site power packed with great recipes both vegan and vegetarian and to cook professionally for 40 years and to share here at Yahoo Answers in the hope that someone will benefit from my work....Show more

Laveta Fathy: I get made fun of a lot for being vegan, and I'm 16.I usually just say 'do you really care about what I choose not to eat so much?'

Stephnie Patout: I am a vegetarian and not a vegan mainly because I gotta have my milk chocolate. Also, my parents would freak out. I'm okay with drinking milk and eating products from milk, or anything so long as the animal doesn't die. I don't wear leather or own leather. Pretty much nothing tha! t kills. If not, for me, it's okay.

Sharie Sommerville: It's simple really. I did it for the animals and the environment. I don't even consider myself an animal fanatic, but I do have compassion for all sentient beings and concern for the future welfare of this tiny blue dot in space we call home.

Kaylee Schmittou: I'm vegetarian. I'm not a vegan because I haven't been able to give up the cheese. I'm trying really hard, but I just don't have the willpower to be successful. I don't drink milk. I never really have and I prefer soy milk. I don't really eat ice cream. Cheese is my weakness. I don't eat cheese with animal rennet in it, so I think that's at least a step in the right direction. That's the only thing holding me back....Show more
