What degree / level of higher education do I need to achieve if I want to teach high school sex ed?

Ardell Luy: If you are interested in teaching sex education, you might need to get a secondary education or health-type degree that deals with sexuality. I would go with either Sociology or Psychology as a Master's degree that focuses on sexuality. To become a teacher, it takes your normal four years (unless you do lateral entry [you teach but don't have the degree necessary to teach the subject], which is a crazy process) of undergrad work. If I were you, I would probably do Health Education and continue on through a Master's in it.Good luck with your endeavors!...Show more

Jackelyn Archut: The other posts are correct, but one thing that you should know is that sex ed isn't a single subject. It's usually handled by the PE/Health teachers, orthe biology department. So you'd need to focus on one of those fields.

Forest Duttinger: well, to teach high school you'll need at least a bachelor's degree and your single subject credential in whatever you want to teac! h, but nowadays with the lack of funding and teachers, you'll end up teaching whatever they'll need you for, mainly math and science and English.

Zelma Casebier: You will need a Bachelor of Education. That will be at least 4-5 years. Depending on what program you go into. There are Bachelor of Education programs that are direct from high school and are 4-5 years in length; or you can take a Bachelor of Arts for 3-4 years in whatever subject you prefer as long as it is "teachable" and follow up with 1 year Bachelor of Education degree.
