Advertising paper (ENG 101)?

Jose Calaycay: I have worked in this field for some time, and up until a month ago, was in the advertising department for a hospice. Though I know this isn't necessarily a fun subject...it is amazing what happened within one year with this industry. They went from the whole "comforting, loving...." angle to "it's about how you live". (versus how you die) I would look up several hospices in your area and compare their ads. Most of them are non-profit but need to advertise to let people know they are there. Because it is a subject nobody wants to approach, advertising is hard...hence, the happier ads came out. You will still find some doing the "grief" type advertising, but not many. Good luck. And if you decide to approach this subject, I will be happy to help you with your research....Show more

Lawana Neemann: One idea that would be interesting yet fairly easy is to compare the advertising from two different advertisers. Make it magazine advertising, so you can have! copies. Choose two advertisers that are either competitors, have comparable products or who seem to be targeting the same people. Comparing Porshe to Clorox would be nonsense, but maybe compare Healthy Choice to Lean Quisine. Find an interesting pair in the magazines you have.I see that this is a college class so you have access to a whole category of magazines. Define your set of magazines and time period and pull all the adds for the chosen products. Cut out the ads from copies you have at home, or print copies at the library.* What are the product attributes that they are headlining?* How do they portray their customer?* Are they being realistic or creating fantasy?* What emotions are they trying to bring out?* What is the image they are creating for their product?* Are they most focussed on the brand name or the customer need?* What sort of positions within the magazine have they received? What kind of editorial are they trying to be around? (This is negotiated.! Advertisers have some control but not total over where they ! run within the magazine.)* Are they doing anything different with their ads and sizes: back-to-back pages, spreads, consecutive 1/4 pages, anything designed to get noticed. * What else demonstrates that these two are trying to do something similar? Something different?* Be sure to think about the issues you have learned about in class. There's an A paper in there if you really think about this....Show more
